A vertical hyperbola is a conic section that can be thought of as an inside-out ellipse that opens upwards or downwards. In more formal terms a hyperbola means for two given points, the foci, a hyperbola is the locus of points such that the difference between the distances to each focus is constant. The diagram below illustrates what a vertical hyperbola looks like and the difference between it and a horizontal hyperbola.
