A lemniscate is a curve usually expressed in polar coordinates and is in the form of any of the various figure eight shaped curves.

The term lemniscate comes from the Latin term lēmniscātus meaning decorated with ribbons. It is also derived from the Greek term λημνίσκος meaning ribbon, or which alternatively may refer to the wool from which the ribbons were made.
