Molar (M) Unit Definition
The molar is a substance concentration unit that is equivalent to the International System of Units (SI) coherent unit moles per cubic meter (mol/m3). Rather than use moles per cubic meter the molar is used. As the mole per cubic meter is inconvenient for most laboratory purposes and most chemical literature traditionally use mole per cubic decimeter mol/dm3, which is the same as moles per liter (mol/L). The molar is represented by the symbol M.
The SI prefix mega (M) has the same symbol. However, the prefix is never used alone, so M unambiguously denotes molar. Sub-multiples and multiples, such as millimolar (mM) and megamolar (MM), consist of the unit preceded by an SI prefix.
